INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATION

Sometimes in life we feel stuck and as though we don’t have the self-esteem to move forward. You may even feel you don’t have a strong sense of who you are. There are many behaviours we engage in to manage and avoid these experiences and associated feelings (e.g. addictions, sex, numbing to emotional experience, devaluing ourselves, perfectionism). These behaviours hold painful feelings at bay, but prevent progress towards the life you want to live. They also often create greater problems in our relationships and lives and can lead to anxiety, depression, and physical complaints.
The Masterson approach to therapy provides a space for the underlying emotions to be held and the defensive behaviours contained, so the feelings can be processed and managed. This process results in us being able to understand ourselves and see others more realistically. It helps develop a strong relationship to our real self. This relationship holds our capacities, resources, and wisdom necessary for accountability, a strong sense of ourselves, healthy relationships, creativity and empowerment.
Therapy is usually mid to long term and is conducted on a weekly or twice weekly basis.

FAMILY THERAPY -

NO CURRENT CAPACITY FOR ADOLESCENT FAMILY THERAPY

The framework of family therapy is more important than how many people are present at any session. Family therapy does not view problems as residing in one person, it views them as a result of unhelpful interaction patterns which create or maintain a problem. The goal of therapy is then to help families develop more helpful patterns rather than “fix” one specific member. This allows each family member to maintain a healthy sense of their own self while staying emotionally connected to the rest of the family.
The primary goal of family therapy is to enable families to manage emotional and/or behavioural problems more effectively, on their own, using their own strengths. To do this, the family group rather than individuals are invited into sessions. The initial task of therapy is to define nature of the “problem” and understand how it is embedded in the family system. All members of the household are asked to attend the first interview and each member is encouraged to share their view of the problem as well as possible solutions. After this first session, appointments may continue with the whole family or parts of the family as arranged.
Working with the family system is important as attitudes, problems, conflicts, behaviours and other issues are often transmitted from one generation to the next. Your therapist will pay particular attention to the type and intensity of expressed emotions, communication styles, family roles, alliances, secrets and emotional triangles.
